A Space That Heals: Merging Design and Wellbeing in Pharmacy

Vision: Creating a Space that Nurtures Health and Connection

At AllCare Pharmacy in Clane, we envisioned a space that goes beyond traditional pharmacy design, tapping into principles of neuroarchitecture and human-centric design. Inspired by ideas from AB+AC Architects, we aimed to create an environment that doesn’t just serve its functional purpose but actively supports mental and physical wellbeing.

Balancing Functionality with a Calming Atmosphere

  • Regulatory Requirements: Meeting stringent healthcare guidelines while creating a soothing environment.
  • Operational Flow: Designing an efficient layout that supports seamless movement for customers and staff.
  • Sensory Sensitivity: Minimising sensory overload through careful selection of materials, lighting, and layout to support a calming experience for neurodiverse individuals.

Using Design as a Tool for Healing

  1. Sensory-Informed Design: Drawing on neuroarchitecture principles, we incorporated soft, non-reflective surfaces and non-fluorescent lighting to reduce sensory stimulation. The goal was to create a calming atmosphere that aids in stress reduction, a principle critical in healthcare environments.
  2. Spatial Layout for Wellbeing: By arranging spaces intuitively and prioritising open paths, we support a smooth customer journey. Key products are strategically placed along natural pathways, enhancing accessibility while subtly guiding customers through the space.
  3. Integrated Nature Elements: To amplify relaxation, we introduced subtle natural elements. The result is an environment that fosters a sense of calm and wellness, aligning with research showing that natural materials and elements can influence the nervous system positively.
  4. Designing for Autonomy: Technology plays a supportive role, with digital kiosks allowing customers to search for products independently. This feature empowers visitors, particularly those who benefit from a sense of control in unfamiliar environments.

An Engaging, Healing Environment

The redesign of AllCare Pharmacy in Clane has received positive feedback from both customers and staff. The environment has been described as inviting and soothing, with customers noting the ease of navigation and calming atmosphere. This transformation aligns with recent studies showing that design elements such as lighting, layout, and material choice can influence wellbeing and even immune response, validating our approach to creating spaces that promote health holistically.
